Western Ghats
The Western Ghats are a mountain range running parallel to the western coast of the Indian peninsula. Their rugged terrain and hill forts provided the base of Maratha power. Accounts of the Maratha Empire describe how Shivaji used the terrain of the Western Ghats and guerrilla warfare to seize forts such as Torna, Rajgad and Raigad.
