Western Ganga dynasty

c. 350–1000 · 4th century · Also known as Western Gangas

The Western Ganga dynasty ruled southern Karnataka in India from about 350 to 1000, with capitals at Kolar and later Talakad. Often subordinate allies of the Chalukyas of Badami and then of the Rashtrakutas, they were major patrons of Jainism; the colossal statue of Gommateshwara at Shravanabelagola was erected by their minister Chavundaraya. Their kingdom fell to the Cholas around 1000.
