Deccan
The Deccan is the large plateau region of peninsular India south of the Narmada River. It was the heartland of the Maratha Empire, whose rise and military style were shaped by its hills and forts, and a persistent zone of conflict for the Mughal Empire. For the Delhi Sultanate, the difficulty of controlling the Deccan contributed to provincial breakaway and decline.
