1469–1521 · 16th century · Also known as Manuel the Fortunate

Manuel I was King of Portugal from 1495 to 1521, known as the Fortunate. His reign saw Vasco da Gama's voyage to India, Cabral's landing in Brazil and the building of a Portuguese empire in the Indian Ocean, as well as fortified posts on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Spice-trade wealth paid for the Manueline style of architecture named after him.
