Battle of Aljubarrota

1385 · 14th century · Part of the 1383–1385 Portuguese interregnum

The Battle of Aljubarrota was fought on 14 August 1385 in central Portugal, between the army of John I of Portugal, with English archers, and the larger army of John I of Castile. Using defensive tactics devised by the constable Nuno Álvares Pereira, the Portuguese won decisively. The victory secured Portugal's independence and the Aviz dynasty, and John I built the monastery of Batalha to commemorate it.
