House of Aviz

The House of Aviz was the royal dynasty of Portugal from 1385 to 1580, founded by King John I. Under its rule, notably with the patronage of Prince Henry the Navigator, Portugal began its overseas expansion along the African coast. It thus presided over the foundation of the Portuguese Empire.
