House of Babenberg

976–1246 · 10th century · Also known as Babenberg dynasty, Babenbergs

The House of Babenberg ruled Austria from 976, first as margraves and from 1156 as dukes, after the Privilegium Minus raised the march to a duchy. Leopold I was the first margrave, and his descendants moved their seat to Vienna and acquired Styria in 1192. The line ended when Frederick II the Quarrelsome was killed in battle in 1246, opening the way for Ottokar II and the Habsburgs.
