House of Avesnes
The House of Avesnes was a noble family from Avesnes-sur-Helpe in Hainaut that rose through the marriage of Bouchard of Avesnes to Margaret, later Countess of Flanders. Bouchard's grandson John II became Count of Hainaut in 1280 and inherited Holland and Zeeland in 1299. The male line ended when Count William IV was killed in battle in 1345, and the counties passed to the Wittelsbachs.
