Battle of Vlaardingen

1018 · 11th century

The Battle of Vlaardingen was fought on 29 July 1018, when Count Dirk III of Holland defeated an imperial army under Duke Godfrey II of Lower Lorraine near his stronghold at Vlaardingen in the Maas delta. Emperor Henry II had sent the army to stop Dirk from levying tolls on river shipping. The victory secured the counts' hold over the delta and laid the foundation of the County of Holland.
