Floris V, Count of Holland

1254–1296 · 13th century

Floris V (1254–1296) was Count of Holland and Zeeland from 1256. He conquered the West Frisians, granted charters to towns and favoured townsmen and peasants against the nobility, earning the name 'god of the peasants'. After he changed sides from England to France, he was abducted by a group of nobles led by Gerard van Velsen and killed in 1296.
