Frederick VII, Count of Toggenburg

d. 1436 · 15th century · Also known as Frederick VII of Toggenburg

Frederick VII was the last Count of Toggenburg, ruling a large territory in eastern Switzerland that stretched from the Toggenburg valley to the Prättigau and Davos. He allied with both Zürich and Schwyz, and when he died without heirs in 1436 their rival claims to his lands led to the Old Zürich War of 1440–1446. His subjects in Davos and the Prättigau formed the League of the Ten Jurisdictions to protect their rights.
