Fukui
Fukui is the capital of Fukui Prefecture on the Sea of Japan side of central Honshu. It grew around Kitanoshō Castle, built by Shibata Katsuie in the 1570s, and from 1601 was the castle town of the Fukui domain of the Echizen Matsudaira family. Rebuilt after heavy bombing in 1945 and an earthquake in 1948, it is a centre of the textile industry.
