Gan (Addu Atoll)
Gan is the southernmost island of Addu Atoll in the Maldives. The British built an airfield there during the Second World War, and from 1957 to 1976 it was the RAF Gan staging post on routes to the Far East and a main source of local employment. The British presence encouraged the secession of the United Suvadive Republic in 1959, and the airfield is now Gan International Airport.
