Gangadhar Rao
Gangadhar Rao was the Maratha Raja of Jhansi of the Newalkar family, who ruled until his death in 1853. He married Manikarnika, later famous as Rani Lakshmibai. Shortly before his death he adopted a son, Damodar Rao, but the governor-general Lord Dalhousie refused to recognise the adoption and annexed Jhansi under the doctrine of lapse in 1854.
