Peshwa
The Peshwa was the chief minister of the Maratha state, an office that became hereditary and the effective seat of power in the eighteenth century. Peshwas such as Balaji Vishwanath and Baji Rao I expanded Maratha territory northwards. Under them the Maratha Empire became a confederacy of semi-autonomous chiefs, while the Chhatrapati retained ceremonial supremacy.
