Mudhol State

1465 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Mudhol

The Deccan state of the Ghorpade family, Maratha chiefs who served the Bijapur Sultanate, and the source of the Mudhol hound.

Origins

The Ghorpades of Mudhol were Maratha military chiefs who held Mudhol as a fief of the Bijapur Sultanate; family tradition places the grant in the 15th century. The register's start date follows that tradition.

Rule and society

In the 17th century the Mudhol Ghorpades remained loyal to Bijapur and opposed Shivaji, who killed Baji Ghorpade of Mudhol in 1664. Later the family held its lands under the Peshwas and, from 1818, under British protection in the Southern Maratha Country. Its rulers promoted the lean Mudhol hound, a sight-hound now used by the Indian Army.

Decline and legacy

Mudhol merged into Bombay State in 1948 and was transferred to Mysore, now Karnataka, in 1956. It is in Bagalkot district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
