Southern Maratha Country
The Southern Maratha Country was the British name for the region between the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers, covering parts of modern southern Maharashtra and northern Karnataka. After the fall of the Peshwa in 1818 its Maratha jagirdars, such as the Patwardhans of Sangli, Miraj, Jamkhandi and Kurundwad, became small princely states under British protection.
