Miraj Senior

1820 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Miraj

The senior of two Patwardhan Brahmin states at Miraj in the southern Maratha country, a town famed for Hindustani music and instrument makers.

Origins

Miraj had been the seat of the Patwardhan family, Chitpavan Brahmin generals of the Peshwas. After the family's lands were divided in 1811, the Miraj share was split again in 1820 into a Senior branch at Miraj and a Junior branch at Budhgaon.

Rule and society

Miraj Senior was a small state of the Southern Maratha Country, later the Deccan States Agency. Its town became a centre of Hindustani classical music, where Abdul Karim Khan of the Kirana gharana settled, and was famed for its sitar and tanpura makers.

Decline and legacy

After accession to India Miraj Senior was merged into Bombay State in 1948 and has been part of Maharashtra since 1960; it lies in Sangli district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
