Also known as Patwardhan family

The Patwardhan were a Chitpavan Brahmin family from the Konkan whose members rose as cavalry commanders under the Peshwas in the 18th century. Rewarded with jagirs in the southern Maratha country, they fought in the wars against Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. Their holdings became the princely states of Sangli, Miraj, Jamkhandi and Kurundwad, which joined India in 1948.
