Miraj Junior

1820 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Budhgaon

The junior of two Patwardhan Brahmin states formed from Miraj in 1820, ruled from Budhgaon in the southern Maratha country.

Origins

Miraj Junior was created in 1820 when the Patwardhan holding of Miraj, itself one of the shares from the family partition of 1811, was divided between two branches. The junior branch took scattered villages and made Budhgaon its seat.

Rule and society

It was a small state of the Southern Maratha Country, later the Deccan States Agency, with lands interspersed among those of Miraj Senior and Sangli State. Little else is recorded of its internal history.

Decline and legacy

After accession to India Miraj Junior was merged into Bombay State in 1948 and has been part of Maharashtra since 1960; Budhgaon lies in Sangli district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
