Jamkhandi State

1811 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Jamkhandi

A Patwardhan Brahmin state in the southern Maratha country, formed when the Patwardhan family divided its lands in 1811.

Origins

The Patwardhans, Chitpavan Brahmin commanders of the Peshwas, held extensive jagirs between the Krishna and the Tungabhadra. In 1811 these were divided among branches of the family, and Jamkhandi became a separate state under Gopalrao Patwardhan.

Rule and society

Jamkhandi was a state of the Southern Maratha Country, later the Deccan States Agency, with a Marathi-speaking ruling house over a largely Kannada-speaking population. Its rulers built schools and in the 20th century moved towards representative government.

Decline and legacy

After accession to India Jamkhandi was merged into Bombay State in 1948, and since 1956 it has been part of Karnataka, in Bagalkot district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
