Chitpavan Brahmins

The Chitpavan Brahmins are a Brahmin community from the Konkan coast of western India. Their influence grew in the 18th century, when the Peshwas, the hereditary chief ministers of the Maratha state, came from the community. Chitpavan families such as the Patwardhans became generals and were rewarded with lands in the southern Maratha country.
