Chitimukulu Sampa

d. 1896 · 19th century · Also known as Sampa Kapalakasha

Chitimukulu Sampa was paramount ruler of the Bemba of north-eastern Zambia from the 1880s until his death in 1896. He resisted the advance of European missionaries and of the British South Africa Company into Bemba country. The disputes over succession that followed his death, and that of the senior chief Mwamba in 1898, allowed the company to establish its control over the Bemba by 1899.
