Chileshe Chepela

19th century · 19th century

Chileshe Chepela was Chitimukulu, the paramount chief of the Bemba of north-eastern Zambia, in the first half of the 19th century. He extended Bemba power by raiding neighbouring peoples and opened trade with Swahili-Arab caravans from the east coast, exchanging ivory and captives for cloth and other goods. His successors, notably Chitapankwa, built on this to make the Bemba the dominant power of the plateau.
