Karim Khan Zand

d. 1779 · 18th century · Also known as Karim Khan

Karim Khan Zand was the founder of the Zand dynasty, who ruled most of Iran from Shiraz after the collapse of Afsharid power, and died in 1779. He declined the title of shah and styled himself Vakil, or regent. His rule is remembered for relative stability, moderation and building works in Shiraz, and the Zand Empire did not long survive him.
