Savanur State

1680 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Savanur

A small Muslim-ruled state in northern Karnataka, held by a Pathan family of Nawabs granted their lands under Aurangzeb.

Origins

Savanur was founded around 1680 when Abdul Rauf Khan, an Afghan (Miana) officer, received a grant from the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in the Carnatic. His descendants ruled as Nawabs of Savanur.

Rule and society

The Nawabs ruled a territory of black-soil cotton and grain country between Dharwad and the Tungabhadra. They lost much land to the Marathas and to Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan of Mysore in the 18th century, and came under British protection after 1818 in the Southern Maratha Country.

Decline and legacy

Savanur acceded to India and merged into Bombay Province in 1948, passing to Mysore State (now Karnataka) in 1956. The town lies in Haveri district.
