Dewas Senior

1728 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Dewas

The senior of the two Maratha Puar states that shared the town of Dewas in Malwa, remembered through E. M. Forster's The Hill of Devi.

Origins

The brothers Tukoji Rao and Jivaji Rao Puar came to Malwa with the Peshwa Baji Rao I and received Dewas around 1728. Their shared holding developed into two states, the Senior Branch descending from Tukoji Rao and the Junior from Jivaji Rao, which divided land and revenues but kept the same capital.

Rule and society

Dewas Senior was a Maratha Hindu state of the Central India Agency, centred on the hill shrine of the goddess Chamunda above the town. Each branch had its own palace, administration and quarter of Dewas. E. M. Forster served as secretary to Maharaja Tukoji Rao III in 1921, an experience he described in The Hill of Devi.

Decline and legacy

After accession to India, Dewas Senior merged into Madhya Bharat in 1948, which became part of Madhya Pradesh in 1956.
