Madhya Bharat

1948 CE – 1956 CE · capital Gwalior

The union of Gwalior, Indore and the smaller Malwa states, an Indian state from 1948 to 1956 with Gwalior and Indore as twin capitals.

Origins

In 1948 the Maratha states of Gwalior State and Indore State joined with more than twenty smaller states of Malwa, including Dhar, Dewas Senior, Dewas Junior, Ratlam and Jaora, to form the United State of Gwalior, Indore and Malwa, known as Madhya Bharat.

Rule and society

Jivajirao Scindia of Gwalior served as Rajpramukh and Yashwant Rao Holkar II as Uprajpramukh. Gwalior was the winter capital and Indore the summer capital. It became a Part B state of India in 1950, with an elected government; Indore's textile mills and the rich black-soil farmland of Malwa were its economic base.

Decline and legacy

Under the States Reorganisation Act Madhya Bharat was merged into Madhya Pradesh on 1 November 1956, except Sunel, transferred to Rajasthan.
