Kathiwara State

1600 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Kathiwara

A small Rajput chiefship in the hills of western Malwa, under British supervision through the Bhopawar Agency.

Origins

Kathiwara was a small estate in the hills of western Malwa near Jhabua, held by a Rajput family from around 1600. Its founding is not well documented.

Rule and society

Its chief ruled hilly, forested country with a largely Bhil population, paying tribute to more powerful neighbours. In the British period it was a minor state in the Bhopawar Agency of Central India. Little else is recorded.

Decline and legacy

Kathiwara joined Madhya Bharat in 1948, which became part of Madhya Pradesh in 1956.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
