Dewas Junior
Origins
Dewas Junior shares its origin with Dewas Senior: the brothers Tukoji Rao and Jivaji Rao Puar received Dewas around 1728 after campaigning in Malwa with Peshwa Baji Rao I. The Junior Branch descends from Jivaji Rao, and the two lines became separate states holding interlocking villages.
Rule and society
The two branches kept separate palaces and administrations in the same town and even shared the main street, an arrangement that puzzled British officials of the Central India Agency. Dewas Junior was a Maratha Hindu state with a Raja, later Maharaja, and a modest revenue.
Decline and legacy
After accession to India, Dewas Junior merged into Madhya Bharat in 1948, which became part of Madhya Pradesh in 1956. The twin palaces still stand in Dewas.
