Pest, Hungary

Pest is the eastern part of Budapest, on the flat left bank of the Danube opposite Buda. A trading town since the Middle Ages, it grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries into Hungary's commercial and cultural centre, home of the National Museum and the Academy of Sciences, and was the focus of the revolution of 1848. In 1873 it was united with Buda and Óbuda to form Budapest.
