Geoffrey of Monmouth

c. 1095–c. 1155 · 12th century

Geoffrey of Monmouth was a Welsh-born cleric and writer whose History of the Kings of Britain (c. 1136) presented a largely legendary history of Britain from the Trojan Brutus to the seventh century. It popularised the stories of King Arthur, Merlin and King Lear and had an enormous influence on medieval literature, although it was largely invented.
