George Martinuzzi

1482–1551 · 16th century · Also known as George Utješenović, Frater Georgius

George Martinuzzi was a Croatian-born Pauline monk and statesman who served John Zápolya as treasurer and became bishop of Várad. After Zápolya's death in 1540 he governed the eastern Hungarian lands for the infant John Sigismund, balancing between the Habsburgs and the Ottomans. In 1551 he arranged the transfer of Transylvania to Ferdinand I and was made a cardinal, but was murdered that December by Habsburg officers who suspected him of dealings with the Ottomans.
