John Zápolya

1487–1540 · 16th century · Also known as John I of Hungary, John Szapolyai

John Zápolya was Voivode of Transylvania from 1510 and, after the death of Louis II at Mohács in 1526, was elected King of Hungary by the nobles as John I. A rival party elected Ferdinand of Habsburg, and Zápolya turned to the Ottoman sultan Suleiman for support. The kingdom was divided, and the Treaty of Nagyvárad in 1538 recognised his rule in the east, which became the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom and later Transylvania.
