Voivodeship of Transylvania

1176 CE – 1570 CE (approx.) · capital Gyulafehérvár

Eastern province of medieval Hungary ruled by royal voivodes, home to Hungarian nobles, Saxons and Székelys, which became an autonomous principality in 1570.

Origins

After Stephen I annexed the Realm of the Gyulas in 1003, Transylvania was organised in royal counties. From 1176, when Leustach is named voivode, a royal official with that Slavic title governed the province for the kings of Hungary.

Rule and society

The voivode headed the counties of the nobility, while German settlers (Saxons) had their own rights under the Andreanum of 1224 and the Székelys formed a separate military community. Romanians formed much of the peasantry. Voivodes such as Ladislaus Kán around 1300 acted almost as independent rulers. After a peasant revolt in 1437, nobles, Saxons and Székelys formed the Union of Three Nations, which excluded Romanians. John Hunyadi served as voivode from 1441.

Decline and legacy

After Mohács in 1526, voivode John Zápolya became king of eastern Hungary. His son John Sigismund renounced the royal title by the Treaty of Speyer in 1570, and the land became the Principality of Transylvania under Ottoman overlordship.
