c. 1406–1456 · 15th century · Also known as Hunyadi János, Iancu de Hunedoara

John Hunyadi was a Hungarian general and nobleman of Wallachian origin who led the fight against the Ottomans. He was voivode of Transylvania from 1441, ban of Severin and regent of Hungary from 1446 to 1453. His victory at the siege of Belgrade in 1456 halted the Ottoman advance for decades, and his son Matthias Corvinus became king.
