Diploma Andreanum

1224 · 13th century · Also known as Andreanum

The Diploma Andreanum was a charter issued by King Andrew II of Hungary in 1224 granting collective privileges to the German 'guests', the Transylvanian Saxons, settled around Hermannstadt (Sibiu). It gave them their own count, judges and freely elected priests, freedom of trade and a fixed tax in return for military service, and it remained the basis of Saxon autonomy until 1876.
