Andrew II of Hungary

c. 1177–1235 · 13th century · Also known as Andrew II

Andrew II was king of Hungary from 1205, of the Árpád dynasty. He led the Fifth Crusade to the Holy Land in 1217–1218 and spent heavily on wars in Galicia, granting away royal estates to his supporters. Pressure from the lesser nobility forced him to issue the Golden Bull of 1222, which limited royal power. He was the father of Béla IV and of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary.
