Elizabeth of Hungary was a daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary and Gertrude of Merania who married Landgrave Louis IV of Thuringia. After his death on crusade in 1227 she left the Wartburg court, founded a hospital at Marburg and devoted herself to the poor and sick under the Franciscan ideal of poverty.
