Andrew I of Hungary

c. 1015–1060 · 11th century

Andrew I was king of Hungary from 1046 to 1060. A member of the Árpád dynasty who had lived in exile in Kievan Rus', he returned during the pagan uprising of 1046 that overthrew Peter Orseolo, and he restored Christianity. He resisted Emperor Henry III, whose campaigns of 1051 and 1052, including the siege of Pressburg, failed, but he was overthrown by his brother Béla I and died of his wounds in 1060.
