Andrew Doria

1775–1777 · 18th century

The Andrew Doria was a brig of the Continental Navy in the American Revolutionary War, named after the Genoese admiral Andrea Doria. On 16 November 1776 the guns of Fort Oranje on Sint Eustatius returned its salute, the first salute given to the flag of the United States by a foreign power, an event remembered as the First Salute. The ship was burned in 1777 to avoid capture.
