Andrew Cohen

1909–1968 · 20th century · Also known as Sir Andrew Cohen

Andrew Cohen was a British colonial administrator who served as Governor of Uganda from 1952 to 1957. A reformer who favoured a unitary, self-governing Uganda, he deported Kabaka Mutesa II of Buganda to Britain in 1953 after the kabaka refused to cooperate and demanded Buganda's separation. The ensuing crisis ended with the kabaka's return in 1955 as a constitutional monarch.
