Kabaka Yekka

1961 · 20th century

Kabaka Yekka, meaning "the king alone", was a political movement and party founded in Buganda in 1961 to defend the position of the kabaka and the kingdom's autonomy. It allied with Milton Obote's Uganda People's Congress to form the government at independence in 1962, and Kabaka Mutesa II became president in 1963. The alliance broke down, and the movement collapsed after the crisis of 1966.
