Kabalega

c. 1853–1923 · 19th century · Also known as Chwa II Kabalega, Kabarega

Kabalega was omukama (king) of Bunyoro in western Uganda from 1870 to 1899. He built a standing army, the abarusura, revived Bunyoro's power, reconquered Toro in 1876 and resisted the advance of Buganda. From 1891 he fought the British and their Ganda allies in a long guerrilla war until his capture in 1899, after which he was exiled to the Seychelles. Uganda honours him as a hero of resistance.
