Lake Victoria

Also known as Nyanza

Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa, shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, and the main source of the White Nile. Kingdoms grew on its shores, including Buganda in the north, the Busoga principalities and the Haya kingdoms such as Karagwe and Kianja in the west. European explorers reached it from 1858, and Britain made Buganda the core of the Uganda Protectorate.
