Lake Xochimilco
Lake Xochimilco was one of the five linked lakes of the Valley of Mexico, lying in its southern part. The Xochimilca and later the Aztecs farmed its shallow waters with chinampas, raised fields built of mud and vegetation. The lake was largely drained from the colonial period onwards, but surviving canals and chinampas at Xochimilco in Mexico City form part of a World Heritage Site.
