Andrea Doria

1466–1560 · 16th century

Andrea Doria was a Genoese admiral and statesman, the leading naval commander of his age. In 1528 he switched from French to Habsburg service, restored Genoa's independence under a new aristocratic constitution and became its dominant figure for three decades. As admiral of Charles V he fought the Ottomans and the Barbary corsairs, and he survived the Fieschi conspiracy against him in 1547.
