Simone Boccanegra

d. 1363 · 14th century

Simone Boccanegra was the first doge of the Republic of Genoa, elected for life in 1339 after a popular revolt against the noble families. He abdicated in 1344, returned as doge in 1356 and died, reputedly poisoned, in 1363. His life inspired Verdi's opera Simon Boccanegra.
