Fort Oranje (Sint Eustatius)

1636 · 17th century

Fort Oranje is a fort above the harbour of Oranjestad on Sint Eustatius, built by Zeeland settlers from 1636. On 16 November 1776 its guns returned the salute of the American brig Andrew Doria, the first foreign salute to the flag of the newly independent United States. The island's trade with the rebels helped provoke Britain's declaration of war on the Dutch Republic in 1780.
