Principality of Transylvania

1570 CE – 1711 CE · capital Gyulafehérvár

Semi-independent Ottoman vassal state in the Carpathians, famed for its religious tolerance and for princes who played the Habsburgs and Ottomans against each other.

Origins

The principality grew out of the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom. By the Treaty of Speyer in 1570, John Sigismund Zápolya renounced the Hungarian royal title and became Prince of Transylvania, ruling Transylvania and the Partium, eastern Hungarian counties, under Ottoman suzerainty with his court at Gyulafehérvár.

Rule and society

Princes were elected by a diet of the three privileged nations, the Hungarian nobles, the Saxons and the Székelys, and paid tribute to the sultan. Four religions were received: Catholic, Lutheran, Calvinist and Unitarian, while the Romanian Orthodox majority had no political rights. Stephen Báthory became king of Poland in 1576, and Gabriel Bethlen made Gyulafehérvár a centre of Protestant learning.

Decline and legacy

George II Rákóczi's disastrous invasion of Poland in 1657 brought Ottoman reprisals. After the Ottoman defeat at Vienna in 1683, Transylvania accepted Habsburg rule through the Leopoldine Diploma of 1691. The failure of Francis II Rákóczi's revolt ended at the Peace of Szatmár in 1711, leading to the Grand Principality of Transylvania.
